1. Imagine Winnipeg
Do you ever imagine what Winnipeg was like in the past? In her new book, Imagining Winnipeg, historian Esylt W. Jones presents the past through the work of photographer Lewis Benjamin Foote (1873-1957). There is a book-signing at McNally Robinson today at 1 p.m. You can make it a day and browse some books, then have a late lunch at the ever-wonderful Prairie Ink restaurant.
2. Trim a tree
The Winnipeg Art Gallery has the perfect way for you to get into the Christmas spirit with your entire family. The WAG invites you to come and help create ornaments and decorate its giant Christmas tree. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served, Santa will be making an appearance, and holiday musicians will perform some festive tunes. At 7 p.m., there will be a screening of Miracle on 34th Street. Admission is free, 6-9 p.m.
3. Explore
a Winter
Wonderland
Tonight, head over to the Red River Exhibition Park, where the Canad Inns Winter Wonderland drive-thru light show will greet you with its glittering glory. More than a million lights flash, blink and twinkle as you drive through the 2.5-kilometre route, complete with a holiday radio station that you can tune in to and really get in the mood. You're in luck, because today, as well as on Fridays and Saturdays, there are free complimentary sleigh rides. $15 per vehicle at the gates, or purchase in advance for $10 at Canad Inns locations, Mac's, or Co-Op gas bars.
4. Meet some molluscs
The Manitoba Museum has just launched its Marvellous Molluscs exhibit, and spending some time today with the shelled fossils is a great way to get out of the cold and learn at the same time. The World Is Their Oyster: Marvellous Molluscs takes you through a variety of eye-catching displays, such as fossils next to modern examples of similar creatures so you can see how far evolution has come. Explore them today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit continues at the museum until April.
5. Let the Lions entertain
The 2012 Cannes Lions will be screening at the WAG, starting this Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Lions are a collection of the greatest and most creative commercials from all around the globe. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll probably want to buy a few things after you watch them. But don't miss out -- you'll be completely entertained, I promise. Other showtimes are listed on the WAG's website. Tickets are $11 and can be purchased online or at the door.
6. Bid for
some gifts
The Winnipeg police are having an unclaimed-goods auction today. They will be auctioning off a huge variety of stuff that hasn't been claimed -- including a stove, binoculars, clothing and jewelry. If you don't want to search for sales at the mall but still pine for some good deals, an auction is a good place to get some gifts for below retail price. The auction is in Headingley, at 7130 Roblin Blvd. Viewing is at 9 a.m. and bidding begins at noon.
7. Get a bedtime story
On Friday, Winnipeg performance artists Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan will be doing the final reading of their book, Bedtime Stories for the Edge of the World. The book, which is written for adults, reimagines colonial North American myths, inserting female characters as pirate queens and sideshow performers to take the place of the traditional Lone Ranger types. At the WAG, Friday at 8:30 p.m.
