1. See the bison

Today is the perfect day to head over to FortWhyte Alive and chill with the bison. I say it's a perfect day to go because on Sundays, free guided tours are given at 2 p.m. You'll be directed by a knowledgeable guide through the forest trails. The tours are free with admission, which is $6 for adults. The park is open from 10-5 today.

2. Munsch it up

Robert Munsch has charmed children and adults alike for more than 30 years with his memorable and delightful stories. The Prairie Theatre Exchange is performing a live-action adaptation of five of his beloved stories, including Murmel, Murmel, Murmel, Mud Puddle and Millicent and the Wind . A perfect way to spend the afternoon with some younger company. Today at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., and tickets are available online for $12.99 at http://www.pte.mb.ca/.

3. Have some adult relaxation

If you're done your holiday shopping and baking and you want to take it down a few notches and relax, I have the perfect place for you. The Toad in the Hole has added a 25+ whisky bar. The bar has more than 75 kinds of whisky as well as other cocktails. Take a crisp walk down Osborne Avenue and end it with a warm-up cocktail at The Toad.

4. Skate your heart out

It's cold out. We all clearly know this. But one thing that cold weather also leads to is frozen ponds, which then leads to skating. Which leads us to this wonderful discover: The Riley Family Duck pond at Assiniboine Park is now officially open for skating! The family-style toboggan run is also open, so grab your skates and sleds and head over today.

5. Live literary music

After the holidays pass us by, there's always a few days of relaxing before we all have to head back to the non-festive season. This Thursday, keep yourself feeling cheery and head over to the Prairie Ink Restaurant at McNally Robinson's on Grant Avenue. There will be free musical entertainment from the Helen White Trio that you can enjoy while you also enjoy some of the great food that the restaurant serves up.

6. Hit some balls

I have a soft spot for mini-golf, and it is especially satisfying when it's an indoor course on a cold day. Add black lights to the mix and it's a whole new level of fun. U-Puttz Black Light Mini Golf is one of my favourite places to go and whack a few balls at neon displays, and luckily it's open today 11 a.m. -10 p.m., so you have ample time to get your putt on.

7. Cosy up

This isn't exactly an event, or a place to go, but I just can't help but mention one of my favourite things to do on a cold winter Sunday. Warm up some tea or cocoa, cuddle up with a book or with a friend for some conversation. Add some warm cookies to the mix and the afternoon will fly by cosily, plus you won't have to deal with the traffic or crowds. You do have all your Christmas preparations done, right?
