Have Big Fun

The Big Fun Festival is happening this weekend, and you don't want to miss out. The festival is an annual indie music fest at multiple venues around Winnipeg's downtown. Today is the last day to check it out. The Winnipeg Free Press Café is offering Death By Breakfast. There will be bands playing at the café from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. You can find out more at bigfunfestival.com.

Let out some laughs

A brilliant way to spend your time is laughing -- that's a mantra I'll tell myself forever. So let it happen and see the comedy The Dishwashers at the Prairie Theatre Exchange. It's about the reversal of luck, and what happens when a high-end patron of a restaurant is forced to take a job as a dishwasher at that very same restaurant. It's on today at 2 p.m., but other showtimes are listed at www.pte.mb.ca.

Hear some musical numbers

I dreamed a dream... of seeing The Dream Concert. Michael Burgess and Rebecca Caine, two Canadian musical theatre stars, present a program of songs from Broadway and London's West End. The program features songs from Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, and My Fair Lady. Today at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at www.wso.ca.

Watch some dance

Contemporary dance can be mesmerizing when seen live. Today at 3 p.m., Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers present Lesandra Dodson's Trilogy Project. The performance features dance artists from across Canada in three unconventional and highly charged duets at The Rachel Browne Theatre. It's $25 for the show, and you can get your tickets from Ticketmaster or by phoning the box office at 204-452-0229.

Have a frozen adventure

The Forks Adventure Programming is always great way to spend a wintery Sunday. There are horse-drawn wagon rides, teepee story telling, and snowboarding in their Winter Glacier Park. At The Forks, starting at 1:30 p.m., with events running until around 4 p.m. More information and a full schedule is at www.theforks.com.

Skate -- and see the huts

While you're at The Forks, definitely go for a skate. The warming huts are up and running and ready for business. This year, a Winnipeg team won the design competition with Hygge House. Three Winnipeg design firms were involved in the creation of the bright yellow hut: Plain Projects, URBANINK, and Pike Projects. Check them out while you can!

See Boats

I know it's not until next Saturday, but I have to mention Boats. Boats is a local band that makes hokey pop songs about death, girls, bears, and football. The band is releasing its third album, A Fairway Full of Miners, in a live show at the West End Cultural Centre on Feb. 2. Tickets are $12 in advance from Ticketmaster, or $17 at the door, which opens at 7:15 p.m.
