IT'S getting harder to find an inner-city grocer where you can buy milk, margarine or potatoes, but soon you may be able to get a double-double where shoppers used to buy produce.
Tim Hortons, the wildly popular Canadian coffee shop chain, wants to build a franchise shop at the corner of Isabel Street and Ross Avenue.
The location was the home of Riediger Foods, an independent grocer that was an institution for decades until closing its doors last year.
City planners are giving Tim's a green light in a report that comes before the city's board of adjustment on Wednesday. Winnipeg's urban planning division recommends the approval of a conditional use that would allow a drive-through window on the property.
Tim's would be located smack in the middle of a West Alexander neighbourhood, next door to the Freight House Community Centre and across the street from a Filipino bakery and a Korean restaurant.
The area is the home of housing projects and low-income rentals.
A website listing for the property shows it isn't on the market for sale anymore.
The real estate agent with DTZ Barnicke Winnipeg Ltd., a UGL Company, could not be reached for comment, but the group's real estate listing showed Thursday it has been conditionally sold.
The asking price was $570,000.
Local company Dillon Consulting is guiding the application for Tim's through the city planning process.

One of the planners confirmed by phone Tim's is serious about opening a franchise in the neighbourhood.
