Toronto man charged in woman's death

A Toronto man has been charged with first-degree murder more than eight months after the death of a Winnipeg woman, Toronto police say.

Jonathan Ash, 23, was originally charged with accessory after the fact to murder in the death of Leanne Freeman, 23. The charge has now been upgraded to first-degree murder.

Freeman was found just after 1 a.m. on Nov. 29, 2011, by a passing motorist on Unwin Avenue near Toronto's harbour front. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and later died in hospital. Some of her personal belongings were found in a trash bin a 20-minute drive from where she was killed.

Police charged Joseph Beauregard, 32, from Whitby, Ont., with first-degree murder and Ash with accessory after the fact to murder in December.

Ash is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
