Conservative MLA Gerald Hawranik has decided to begin his retirement from politics six months earlier than he originally planned.

The 59-year-old Beausejour lawyer, who represented the Lac du Bonnet constituency, filed his official resignation on Friday. He had earlier said he would remain in the House until the fall election.

The Conservatives announced that Morris MLA Mavis Taillieu will succeed Hawranik as the party's House leader. The legislative sitting resumes April 12, with the presentation of the 2011-2012 provincial budget.

Hawranik's wife Pamela was appointed dean of the faculty of graduate studies at Athabasca University more than two years ago, and the two have been commuting between Edmonton and Manitoba ever since. They have two grown daughters -- one in Edmonton and one in Dauphin -- and two young grandchildren.

The long-distance commute has been a burden, said Hawranik, who completed the sale of his law practice on Friday.

His resignation before the end of the legislative session means he will not qualify for severance pay from the province. It leaves the Conservatives with 18 members in the 57-seat House.

Hawranik said he has received an offer to practise law from an Edmonton law firm, but has yet to decide whether he will accept it or try his hand at something else.
