Trudeau foundation brings luminaries to city conference

Some of Canada's smartest people are in Winnipeg for the next three days.

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation's seventh annual conference begins this evening, and continues through Saturday with speakers, panels and workshops on human rights issues.

The foundation will also present its four latest $225,000 fellowships.

The foundation boasts 18 Manitobans among its members, including nine Trudeau Scholars.

One of those scholars is Martine August, a graduate of Gordon Bell High School and the University of Winnipeg, who's conducting doctoral research into the social implications of public housing redevelopment.

Jason Morris-Jung attended École Centrale in Transcona, and he's now doing his doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley researching the effects on communities displaced by conservation measures.
