Two homicides hours apart

Elmwood Park, West End, sites of latest slayings

Police were investigating two homicides on Friday, in Winnipeg's second violent weekend in a row.

The first slaying involved a 42-year-old man who was shot to death in the West End.

Hours later, a second man was discovered in Elmwood Park, causing officers to swarm the area.

"We've now had two incredibly busy weekends back-to-back where we're now dealing with multiple homicides," said Const. Jason Michalyshen, spokesman for the Winnipeg Police Service.

"Certainly, the resources within the police service -- I'll speak over the past 24 hours -- have been incredibly busy, and I think that would probably be an understatement."

The first call came in at about 12:10 a.m. Friday after people alerted emergency officials about a shooting on the 600 block of Maryland Street.

When officers arrived, they found a 42-year-old man, who was injured in a shooting, on the sidewalk.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died.

"It's scary land. You got to expect that," said John, who was drinking a beer while sitting outside a home on Maryland, next to where police cruisers guarded the shooting scene.

His friend Terry said the neighbourhood has deteriorated.

"You can't walk the streets in this neighbourhood anymore," he said. "Even the police have no control over it. It's an everyday thing now."

Three evidence markers sat on a sidewalk in front of a residence, and police tape surrounded the front of the property and neighbouring homes.

Police hadn't released the victim's name, but Michalyshen said he wasn't aware the shooting was linked to gangs or drugs.

He said he wasn't aware of any connections between the shooting and any other crimes.

As of Friday, no arrests had been made.

Michalyshen said officers from the major crimes unit were looking into what happened.

Officers rushed to Elmwood Park on the 300 block of Henderson Highway at about 5 a.m. after reports of an injured man. Emergency officials rushed to the park to treat him, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Hours later, yellow police tape surrounded the entire park and police vehicles were concentrated in an area off Glenwood Crescent, close to where the park backs onto the Red River.

Earlier, officers went door-to-door on the streets surrounding the park, asking for information and seeking surveillance tape that could serve as evidence.

Police wouldn't say how the man died, except he had "suspicious" injuries.

A neighbour said the police activity was highly unusual for the area.

"We have great neighbours," said Ron Blatz, who added police had shown up and asked if he saw anything unusual.

Another neighbour, who didn't want his name used, said the body was on the ground near a bench inside the park, toward the river.

He said the body was covered with a tarp, but an official examining the body had focused on the head and chest.

The bottom of the body did not appear injured, the neighbour said.

Officers from the homicide unit were looking into what happened.

The deaths are the 10th and 11th homicides of the year.

Last Saturday, 21-year-old Johnathen James Felix died after he was shot on the 200 block of Balmoral Street.

The same day, the body of Carolyn Marie Sinclair, 25, was found in a garbage bag in a back lane of an apartment building on the 700 block of Notre Dame Avenue. No arrests have been made in either case.

Anyone with information about the Maryland Street homicide is asked to call police at 986-6219. Anyone with information on the second homicide is asked to call 986-6508.

People can also call CrimeStoppers at 786-8477 (TIPS).
