U of M at table on BU med school

BRANDON -- The University of Manitoba will have equal representation in a provincially funded feasibility study into a proposed medical school at Brandon University.

Premier Greg Selinger, who made the announcement Thursday in Brandon, said BU president Deborah Poff will chair the study and U of M dean of medicine Brian Postl will be the vice-chairman.

"All of the details will be announced this spring," Selinger told media following a Brandon Chamber of Commerce luncheon. "I wanted to confirm today who the leadership would be on the study committee."

Following the premier's announcement, a notably happy Poff said the U of M's involvement in the feasibility study would be conducted as a partnership with BU.

"We're going to have -- I don't think all the details have been announced yet -- but we're going to have equal representation between both universities," Poff said.

Last year, the provincial government asked BU to broaden the scope of its request to study the feasibility of creating a medical school program to include all provincial possibilities.

Poff confirmed on Thursday that the study will have a "broader representation of interested parties," with a focus on health-care issues in rural and northern Manitoba.

While both she and Postl will head the study, she said other health representatives in the region will be involved.

The whole purpose of the feasibility study, Poff said, is to assess many factors of primary care, physician recruitment and retention, and to assess what aspects of the system are working -- and what's not working -- in rural and northern communities.
