U of M faculty miffed web firm lets student share lecture material

A web-based company that helps students find textbooks, study notes, and lecture materials denies it is stealing the personal intellectual property of University of Manitoba professors.

The U of M Faculty Association warned last week that LocAZu lets students exchange entire lectures and course materials that are the property of the professors who created them.

A spokeswoman from LocAZu said in an email the website has saved Canadian students $7 million on used textbooks over university bookstore prices. It enables students who have missed a lecture to catch up, she said.

If professors see anything on the website that is their personal property, LocAZu will act on their complaints, the spokeswoman said.

"Lecture notes are not copyrighted and have been exchanged between students for generations," she said.

"If there are any materials that are personal intellectual property, they can be reported and we will remove them and penalize the student who posted it."
