U of M to award honourary degrees to trio
Frost, the CEO of the Winnipeg Foundation, will receive the honourary degree at the U of M's 42nd fall convocation in late October. He will be joined by Husky Energy CEO John Lau and Andrew Bjerring, founding board member of CANARIE Inc, a research and innovation network.
Frost, an active volunteer and philanthropist, promotes the growth of local charities. In 2008, the Winnipeg Foundation approved more than $19 million in grants for over 650 charities.
Winnipeg Foundation is the city's largest philanthropic organization and, at 85-years-old, the oldest community foundation in Canada.
Before he joined the Winnipeg Foundation in 1997, Frost worked for the City of Burlington, the Region of Hamilton Wentworth, and the Region of Peel in Ontario. He came to Winnipeg in 1989 to work as city commissioner under the leadership of two mayors -- Bill Norrie and Susan Thompson.
Frost earned a spot on the Winnipeg Free Press's Power 30 ranking in 2005, when he was named one of the province's most influential people. He has also served on a number of boards including the Manitoba CancerCare Foundation and the Winnipeg Economic Development Board.
Lau is responsible for Husky's corporate direction and is credited with carving Husky Energy's position in the Alberta oilsands and on the Atlantic coast in the field of ethanol production. He has held senior positions within the Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd. and Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. group of companies.
He is a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Hong Kong Society of Accountants and the Taxation Institute of Hong Kong.
Bjerring chairs the advisory board for the Institute for Information Technology at the National Research Council of Canada and is an active member of the board at the Communications Research Centre. He spent 18 years as a faculty member and senior administrator in information technology at the University of Western Ontario.
