U of W a partner in astrobiology program

ARE we alone? That's the question the newly created Canadian Astrobiology Training Program (CATP) is looking for people to answer.

The program is Canada's first cross-disciplinary, multi-institutional undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral training program in astrobiology.

Its partner universities -- University of Winnipeg, McGill, Western, McMaster and Toronto -- are actively recruiting the "best and the brightest" to fill 70 post-doctoral, graduate and undergraduate student positions over the next six years, a news release said.

Successful candidates will be exposed to innovative research and training approaches, field work and lab work with government and industry partners, including NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

The astrobiologists will look for life beyond the Earth with the ultimate goal of having Canadian scientists actively participate in future space missions -- including the proposed Mars mission in 2018.

The astrobiology training program is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
