U of W preparing 2112 time capsule

Memo to assignment editor -- I'll need a photographer booked for an assignment we'll cover at Wesley Hall in October 2112.

That's when the University of Winnipeg will open the latest time capsule to be buried later this month at the downtown campus.

Of course, it goes without saying we'll all be around to see it opened, and everyone will still be reading daily newspapers.

Back in June 2004, U of W president Lloyd Axworthy opened the previous time capsule laid in the cornerstone of Wesley Hall in 1894, and he'll be putting it back with new contents later this month, date still undecided.

Count on hoopla aplenty.

"We want to seal up the hole in the cornerstone of Wesley before the cold weather sets in, and that is where it's going. The idea is for it to be opened in 100 years, but a plan around that has not yet been made," said a U of W official.

What, the university can't book appointments 100 years hence?

So what's going in the time capsule?

"We're including a copy of the Uniter and some other printed matter, a letter from the president and some U of W-related communication materials," said the university spokesman. Organizers "intend to also bury items from non-traditional student groups and external community groups -- these items are still to be determined. We may consider adding a loonie and a toonie, as there were coins in the previous one."

And there's a contest underway among U of W students to write letters to the 22nd century, one of which will be included.

Here's what the 1894 time capsule contained, all of which is currently in the U of W archives:

-- Report of the faculty to the board of directors, Wesley College, 22 June, 1894.

-- Report of the board, Wesley College, to the Manitoba and North West Conference, Methodist Church, 22 June, 1894.

-- Names of subscribers to the Wesley College Building Fund, 1894.

-- Wesley College calendar, 1893-94 session, 1893.

-- Minutes, Manitoba and North-West Conference, Methodist Church, 1893.

-- Doctrine and discipline of the Methodist Church, 1890.

-- Copies of the Manitoba Free Press, Winnipeg Daily Tribune, Daily Nor'Wester, and Christian Guardian.
