CITY councillors next week will hear a long-awaited update on the future of City of Winnipeg arenas.
St. Vital Coun. Brian Mayes said council's protection and community services committee is to receive a Nov. 19 briefing on a request for proposals for city arenas.
In October 2011, the city issued an expression-of-interest request to see if any private businesses or non-profits want to build and operate new multiplex arenas or add sheets of ice in existing facilities. The bulk of the city's arenas are more than 40 years old and in such rough shape they are nearing a "crisis state," according to a city administration report.
Mayes wants to make sure council takes its time on any recommendations and does not rush into action before the capital budget vote in December. He said the city owes its communities proper consultation on any potential changes.
"My concern is this thing is so overdue. It's almost a year overdue. How did that happen?" Mayes said on Wednesday. "Let's not feel we're rushed to take any kind of action."
