Winnipeg's private waste collector half a day behind as deadline looms
WINNIPEG'S private garbage and recycling collector was running behind half a day on Friday even as the city's get-tough deadline looms on Sunday.
"The plan remains the same. Right now, everything is status quo, as it was (Thursday)," when the city issued a warning against private contractor Emterra), city spokeswoman Michelle Bailey said Friday.
"We're about half a day behind. It's hit or miss all over," she said.
City solid waste manager Darryl Drohomerski said Thursday Winnipeg will hire more collection crews and charge Emterra, if the firm has not caught up by Sunday.
"There's going to be nothing to report until Monday," said Bailey.
Crews were to work throughout the weekend to try to catch up, she said.
"If your stuff hasn't been picked up yet, we don't want people to bring their carts in. The trucks could come 10, 10:30 p.m., and if it's not there, you'd be missed," Bailey said.
Following a slew of missed pickups and delays in collection, the city told Emterra it needs to fix the problems and catch up by Sunday.
Some residents have complained they haven't had garbage collection in two weeks. On Oct. 1, 165,000 single-family homes switched to automated garbage and recycling carts from manual collection. Earlier this week, Mayor Sam Katz said the new waste collector should suffer financial penalties if service problems persist beyond the period stipulated in their contract.
Drohomerski said August was a grace period, but the city has charged Emterra penalties for its performance since Sept. 1 -- though he declined to reveal the amount of the fine.
Since the city-wide changeover on Oct. 1, the city's 311 hotline has received about 5,000 calls about the new garbage and recycling system.
