West Nile lays city man low

A Winnipeg man was very ill with West Nile virus Friday as the province announced the number of Manitobans infected with the disease had grown to nine.

Manitoba Health would not release any more information about the man, who is in his 50s, due to privacy concerns, but the department did say he has West Nile neurological syndrome.

Dr. Richard Rusk, a provincial medical officer of health, said those who get this form of the disease often wind up in hospital.

"The actual virus has not just caused that typical flu-like symptom and achiness," he said, "but has actually penetrated into the brain."

Nobody has died in Manitoba from West Nile since 2007, when the disease was rampant. That year, 587 people were diagnosed with the illness and four died.

In the past week, four new cases of West Nile were identified in Manitoba, bringing the total to nine.
