West Nile virus found in mosquitoes

The provincial health department said Thursday there is a high risk of exposure to West Nile virus throughout southern Manitoba.

The department urges Manitobans to do everything they can to avoid mosquito bites -- even when there don't appear to be many bugs around.

Recent hot and humid conditions have created ideal conditions for the development of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, the type that carry West Nile.

So far this season, 20 positive West Nile-virus mosquito samples have been identified. None were identified last year.

No human case of West Nile virus has been reported so far this year.

During the week of July 15, Manitoba Health identified Culex tarsalis mosquito samples with West Nile in 11 communities: Altona, Beausejour, Brandon, Carberry, Deloraine, Selkirk, the Sioux Valley First Nation, Ste. Anne, Stonewall, West St. Paul and Winnipeg.

The number of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes has increased across southern Manitoba, especially in the southwest and central regions.

Manitobans are urged to spend less time outdoors between dusk and dawn, apply repellent, wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and make sure door and window screens fit tightly and contain no holes.

The public is also encouraged to reduce standing water in yards and to clean out eavestroughs.

So far, authorities have decided against a fogging program to kill adult mosquitoes.

However, the health department said it will continue to monitor the situation.
