STRONG wind blew through Manitoba's cottage country Thursday, adding more flood fears to residents along Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg.

The province issued high wind alerts for the south basin of Lake Winnipeg, which included Gimli, Chalet Beach, Grand Marais and Victoria Beach.

Areas around Lake Manitoba, Lake Winnipegosis and Lake St. Martin -- three lakes that have been at flood stage for weeks -- were also included.

The province also issued a high wind alert for the eastern shore and southeastern corner of the south basin of Lake Manitoba, which included Twin Lakes Beach, St. Laurent, Lundar Beach, Sandy Bay, Westbourne, Delta Beach, Winnipegosis and Birch Bay.

Ed Borchert, the emergency measures co-ordinator for the RM of Coldwell, said the forceful wind caused high waves.

Waves slammed in and splashed over dikes, he added.

Rain is also in the forecast this weekend, as an unstable weather system makes its way in from the west. It's expected to dump 10 millimetres of rain by Saturday morning in the Souris and Red River basins.

About 30 mm of rain are expected to fall in localized storms over central Manitoba.
