Winnipeg police concerned that older drivers not getting anti-drinking message

WINNIPEG - Police in Winnipeg say festive season checkstop numbers indicate young people are getting the message about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Checkstop numbers for the city from December show motorists between the ages of 26 and 40 formed the bulk of those charged with impaired-driving-related offences.

Drivers 20 and younger — the age group targeted by massive media efforts — made up 3.8 per cent of those charged.

The same group made up 10 per cent of those charged in the 2010 festive season.

Manitoba Public Insurance cautions that the results are a snapshot, but they indicate older drivers remain a problem in understanding the dangers of drinking and driving.

Sgt. Rob Riffel, who co-ordinates Winnipeg police impaired-driving countermeasures, says some people in the older age group seem to think it's a badge of honour if they can drive home drunk. (Winnipeg Free Press)
