Winnipeggers to join pot protest

WINNIPEGGERS will be joining Canadians across the country today to protest changes to the Marihuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR) -- they'll be at Tory MP (Saint Boniface) Shelley Glover's office this morning.

One of the key changes in the regulations would prohibit people from growing their own medicinal marijuana by only allowing licensed producers the right to grow, import or export.

The changes are expected to be fully enforced by March 31, a government release said.

Kevin Huewan, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, said the changes would limit Canadians' rights to produce their own medicine.

He said it would also limit him in his ability to grow medicinal marijuana with his medicinal licence. "They're going to put it in the hands of commercial industry. There's just no need for it," Huewan said.

In order to show their opposition to the changes, people created Facebook pages urging people to protest in front of their local MP's office.

In Winnipeg, people will be protesting in front of Glover's office, Huewan said.

"She's the Conservative MP, and it's her government that will be putting into force these new regulations. We're there to let her know we don't like the new changes," he said.

About 20 to 30 people are expected to join the protest, Huewan said.

"We're hoping that Glover will consider the changes to the program, and maybe we can get the Conservative government to take a look before they actually do implement the changes," he said.

Glover said in an email she supports Canadians' right to protest, as well as the changes to the MMAR.
