Woman falls to her death
Police probing plunge from downtown complex
WINNIPEG police had not disclosed Sunday if a young woman who fell to her death from a downtown apartment building was the victim of an accident, suicide or foul play.
"We're keeping everything open at this point," Const. Jason Michalyshen said.
Police said emergency personnel were called to the 500 block of St. Mary Avenue at about 3:20 a.m. Sunday to deal with an injured woman.
The woman was taken to hospital and later died.
On St. Mary Avenue, near Portage Avenue, yellow police tape surrounded the main entrance to Colony Square, a brown brick, twin-tower apartment complex.
Evidence markers were placed near two pools of dried blood near an outdoor courtyard close to the complex's west tower, at 555 St. Mary Ave.
Three men and a woman, visibly shaken and tearful, were seen Sunday night placing flowers near where the victim landed.
Police remained at the scene Sunday night.
Michalyshen said police would release more details today, adding only that the dead woman was about 22 years of age.
The tower at 555 St. Mary Ave. has 17 floors, while the tower at 525 St. Mary Ave. has 16 floors.
A resident on the eighth floor of 555 St. Mary said he and a friend were playing video games when they heard what they thought was a thud outside. Later police and paramedics arrived.
"I could see the paramedics performing CPR on her," Greg McIvor said.
McIvor said several residents in the building told him they believed the woman fell from the top floor.
McIvor said police officers went door-to-door in the building Sunday morning, asking residents if they heard anything unusual, including if they heard gunshots or people yelling.
McIvor said he had heard what sounded like fireworks at about the same time the woman plunged to her death but added it could have been gunshots.
"It was hard to tell because we were playing video games and there was lots of noise going on," McIvor said.
McIvor said the woman lying on the sidewalk was young, in her early 20s, and was nicely dressed.
"It looked like she was dressed up for the evening," McIvor said.
A woman resident in the other tower said she heard two men on the street in front of the building at around 2 a.m., arguing about a girl.
The woman said she went back to sleep but was awokened briefly by the sound of police cars and ambulance at about 3:20 a.m.
"It wasn't anything unusual in this neighbourhood and I went back to sleep," the woman said.
"I didn't think there was a connection to the arguing I heard earlier."
