Women's foundation passes $1-M mark for fundraising

Founders and supporters of the Women's Endowment Fund had a million reasons to celebrate on Thursday.

The fund, part of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, has accumulated a total of $1 million since being created in 1994.

Marsha Cowan, the foundation's executive director, said the WEF has gone from donating a total of $750 to three charities in its first year to $40,000 this year.

Through the years, she said, the fund has distributed more than $300,000 to 68 different organizations in Manitoba.

"I am proud to be one of the original donors," she said. "We wanted to promote women's philanthropy and we have succeeded."

Lillian Neaman was not only one of the original founders, she has also founded separate funds for her mother, three daughters and five granddaughters.

"I feel it is so important for women to have a separate voice," Neaman said Thursday during the WEF's annual fundraising luncheon.

"Before this, there wasn't really a voice for small women's groups that weren't necessarily connected with the Jewish community. All the money goes for women's causes."

WEF co-chairwomen Jane Rabb and Susan Rykiss said they were honoured to helm the organization for two years and are proud it has reached this milestone.

"... $2 million is our next goal," Rabb said.

"And we will get to it faster than we did the first million," added Rykiss.

Rabb said it has also been nice going through grant applications and helping organizations.

"It's a lot of fun and very inspiring. We have been able to meet and support several wonderful women's organizations."

Barbara Judt, Osborne House's executive director, said WEF helped them buy furniture for three interim housing apartments and hire a healthy coping behaviours specialist.

"Their dollars have certainly made it possible for us to do some very much-needed programs and project work," Judt said.
