BEHIND a strip of tony highrise condos on Wellington Crescent, a private company is scrambling to protect one luxury building from the swollen Assiniboine River.
Since Tuesday, an excavation firm has been using Bobcats to move 400 tons of gravel behind 255 Wellington Cres., as the river threatens to spill over eroded banks.
"We have to back-fill it with gravel before we can put in the sandbags," said Kelvin Kartage Ltd.'s foreman at the site, Jerry Petkau.
Thursday afternoon, a Bobcat buzzed back and forth from the pile on the boulevard to the back of the condominium complex, where units lease for $1,700 a month.
There, the Assiniboine had risen to within a few metres of the luxury building that boasts "fabulous river views."
Another residential property at 1720 Pembina Hwy., called "1720 Pembina on the Red," is also being shored up, said Petkau.
Crews were to put in 40,000 sandbags Thursday as the Red River rose within metres of that building.
