No more juggling for Helena
HELENA Bonham Carter says she will take a respite from acting, to pay more attention to her partner Tim Burton and their two kids.
This is often code for "my agent says there's nothing for me right now," but with her I don't believe it, she always has all the work she needs. Tim has been off work being a parent for a while; now it's her turn.
"Juggling motherhood with acting is hard and I'm dropping all the balls at the same time," she told the Telegraph. "You always feel like you're doing everything badly."
She's 46. He's 54. Billy is 10, and Nelli is six (and isn't it nice that I don't have to specify which kid is which gender?).
But will he lip-synch?
PSY has been booked to play the South Korean presidential inauguration, Feb. 25 in Seoul.
I suspect that the president-elect (Park Guen-hye, but you knew that) probably arranged this out of sheer gratitude that Psy didn't run against him.
Clooney has them talking, by George
GEORGE Clooney's always interesting, but his new movie, for Disney, has got people talking more than usual, mainly because nobody knows much about it.
It was called 1952, but now it's called Tomorrowland. The director is Brad Bird, who did The Incredibles and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and who was tipped for the next Star Wars movie, until J.J. Abrams got that gig.
Anyway there was a Tomorrowland at the original Disneyland, which opened in 1955, and Disney loves self-referential movies. But this is apparently a sci-fi special-effects action flick. So what the heck?
The picture opens Dec. 9, 2014.
REMEMBER Jamie-Lynn Sigler? Played the daughter, Meadow, in The Sopranos?
She just announced -- via Twitter, natch -- her engagement to Washington Nationals infielder Cutter Dykstra, son of 1980s player Lenny Dykstra.
She's 31. He's 23.
It was made that way
CHRISTIAN Dior Couture wants you to know that Jennifer Lawrence's gown did not, repeat not, tear at the Screen Actors Guild ceremony the other night, as mentioned in this column and everywhere else on earth.
"The dress is made with different levels of tulle and satin and that is what the viewers saw when Jennifer lifted her dress slightly," the company said in a statement. "It was not ripped and there was no malfunction...it was the design of the gown."
That's their story and they're sticking to it. Still, people who were seated right there, notably Marion Cotillard, did looked shocked. On the other hand I have now seen a longer clip, and she didn't fix anything; the dress just came back together, so maybe it really was designed that way.
You've got to keep up
A study for KPMG, the consultants, found that 60 per cent of American TV viewers are accessing the Internet at the same time.
"Multitasking is getting bigger and bigger," said some KPMG guy with a briefcase. "It's getting to older generations as well, as there are more and more options in front of them."
So are you keeping up? Or are you the old-fashioned, square, stick-in-the-mud loser type?
Sex with his socks on
RETIRED actress Carole Mallory, now 71, spent a lot of time with famous men. She wrote a book about her eight years with Norman Mailer, and now she tells all about many others in a new book, Picasso's Ghost. The N.Y. Post got a sneak peek.
The title refers to her time with Pablo Picasso's son Claude. Mallory -- who was in The Stepford Wives and Looking for Mr. Goodbar -- was also at various times up close and personal with Robert De Niro, Peter Sellers, and Richard Gere, to name a few.
De Niro, she writes, "never stopped looking in my eyes" when they made love, and kept his socks on. Sellers "had hair everywhere." Gere's "gymnastic skills were apparent... A sex symbol not to be forgotten."
What's going on, John?
LAST we heard, John Mayer and Katy Perry were still an item. So why was he in New York at some event with his arm around Allison Williams, of this show Girls? The N.Y. Daily News spotted them.
Anyway, isn't Williams supposed to be seeing Ricky Van Veen, a founder of the website CollegeHumor?
All four of these people are friends, so, you know, it's probably nothing. Then again, this is John Mayer.
ALEC Baldwin's yoga-instructor wife Hilaria Thomas is expecting, says In Touch Weekly. They got married last June.
This means his daughter Ireland, whose mom is Kim Basinger, will be a big half- sister.
Alec is 54. Hilaria is 28. Ireland is 17.
Moving into a bigger house?
MELISSA Gilbert and Timothy Busfield are engaged.
Yes you do. She was Laura on Little House on the Prairie in the '70s and early '80s, and he played Elliott on thirtysomething, still one of my favourite shows, from 1987 to '91.
Between them they have five kids from previous relationships. She left Bruce Boxleitner in 2011; he's been single since divorcing designer Jenny Merwin in 2007, after 20 years.
Gilbert is 48. Busfield is 55.
A coup for Cooper
BRADLEY Cooper as Lance Armstrong? Cooper is denying it, but director J.J. Abrams has spilled the beans.
Last week Coop told a British interviewer that he would love to play the "fascinating" character in the upcoming biopic.
Then Abrams told Entertainment Tonight that "[Cooper] sent me an email and we've been talking."
When Access Hollywood asked about all this, Cooper said "No... Oh my God, that's so nuts." Nobody believed him; sounds like it's on.
