Your Weekend Weather

Hand me a tissue, Winnipeg, because I'm feeling a touch emotional this morning.

The Weather Column is feeling this way because I am so very proud of each and every one of you.

What I'm trying to say, Winnipeg, is: You did it! You survived the first real cold snap of the winter of 2012. So please, everyone, put down your newspaper for a moment, stand up and take a well-deserved bow.

The truth is, this has been one weird winter, to say the least. We were basically way above normal until Jan. 10, a day when the high hit a stunning 5 C, a full 18 degrees above normal. Since then, with a few exceptions, it's been getting colder and colder.

According to Environment Canada weather expert Dale Marciski: "Here in Winnipeg, the coldest we got was -29 C on Wednesday morning, plus we had wind chill issues. It briefly touched -40 on Thursday."

But my pal, Dale, and I have some swell news, Winnipeg -- the cold snap is about to snap. It'll start today, with a 60 per cent chance of flurries and a high of -11 C, up from the normal high of -13 C at this time of year.

On Sunday, we're talking about another 60 per cent chance of flurries along with a lovely high of -4 C. The rest of the week should be reasonably sunny with a high of -5 C on Thursday. We can live with that, Winnipeg.

"The real cold air is going to move out now," Dale promised Friday. "There's a low-pressure system developing over the Rockies and it's going to bring some flurries, but it's also bringing milder air up."

Now that we are stepping out of the deep-f-f-f-f-freeze, you kids are going to want to celebrate. Being a hopeless romantic, I'd start at the Wonderful Wedding Show at the convention centre today and Sunday. We're talking something like 400 exhibitors showcasing everything from cupcakes to confetti cannons.

Or get a jump on Chinese New Year, which officially arrives on Monday, by heading to centre court at The Forks today from 2-4 p.m. to celebrate the Year of the Dragon with dancing, martial arts, cooking and music.

Dale insists our weird weather has something to do with mild Pacific air duking it out with cold Arctic air, but I personally believe an evil genius ("Muahahahaaaah!") has invented a weather machine and is testing it out before demanding a cool $1 billion.

I asked Dale if that theory makes sense and he said: "No! But it would make a good movie plot. Maybe the paper should send you on a fact-finding mission under the polar ice cap."

At first I assumed Dale was joking, but, when I asked who should play me in the movie, he said: "He's a little short, but probably Tom Cruise." I would have said George Clooney, but you can't argue with an expert.
