Your Weekend Weather
Grab your hankies, folks, because it's time for another heart-tugging instalment of Weather Forecasting With Celebrities.
Today's moving celebrity forecast comes courtesy of my good buddy, Tom Milroy, a longtime radio icon who on Friday morning made his farewell appearance on the Fab 94.3 morning show with pals Beau and Frazier.
I was among a small army of friends who descended on the station -- and the only one who brought the gift of beer -- to watch this broadcasting legend sign off after 36 years on-air, including 26 years peeking out the same frosty window on Pembina Highway and watching exhaust fumes dance in the winter air.
While you're still marvelling at the beauty of that last paragraph, here's Tom's scientific outlook on what to expect this weekend: "There's a 90 per cent chance of lying on the couch all day watching movies, with scattered periods of me doing chores."
You are going to be shocked to hear this, but that is almost identical to Environment Canada's forecast, which says Winnipeg will continue to be The Land That Winter Forgot, with mainly cloudy skies and a balmy high today of -5 C, compared to the normal high of -12 C at this time of year.
On Sunday, the weather office says, it will be sunny and the high will drop to -10 C, but it will bounce back to 0 C on Monday and we can expect a 40 per cent chance of snow. Better still, it should hit (Gasp!) 1 C on Tuesday.
Now cue the tear-jerking "walking away music" from The Incredible Hulk, because here's how Tom thinks we should mark his first weekend in "retirement": "Stay inside at all times. (Breaks into a goofy grin) No, it's a beautiful weekend. Try the river walk! God knows you can't do it in the summertime."
Once you've enjoyed a brisk walk, I'm going to recommend you check out Ticketmaster or the WSO box office for tickets to the 21st annual New Music Festival, which opens today and is celebrating Icelandic composers and performers. Find out more at newmusicfestival.ca
After the curtain drops on your New Music Fest show, you'll still have time to check out one of 27 local artists at the first-ever Big Fun Music Festival, with events scattered across a bunch of venues in the Exchange District and downtown. Get the full schedule at bigfunfestival.blogspot.com
Normally I'd send you on your way here with an insightful punchline, but not today. No, today the final word comes from my pal Tom who, when asked if he had any final words of wisdom for Winnipeggers, flashed a wicked grin and chortled: "Take my advice: Drop your pants and slide on the ice!"
