Your Weekend Weather

Get ready for an adrenalin rush, because it's time for another thrilling instalment of Weather Forecasting With Celebrities.

Today's forecast comes courtesy of my pal Jon Ljungberg, popular stand-up comedian, former host of Breakfast TV and current special events co-ordinator for the Riverview Health Centre Foundation.

We met Friday morning to chat about Riverview's upcoming Cycle on Life fundraiser, for which I will be the MC on June 3, and I forced Jon to cough up the following weekend weather forecast: "Considering how I live in an old house and my basement leaks and I have plans to get out in the garden, it's going to rain."

While I stuffed myself with bacon, Jon offered a few recommendations on fun stuff to do this weekend: "Despite the rain, get out and enjoy the community. Do people go to patios in the rain? I think they should be allowed to. I like to go to the indoor flea market on Mulvey Avenue. I just picked up a 1974 Adventure Team talking G.I. Joe there, the one with the beard and the kung fu grip. Did I mention I collect toys?"

Shockingly, Jon's forecast is almost identical to the glum outlook from Environment Canada, which says we can expect mostly clouds today with a high of 15 C, which isn't even close to the normal high of 22 C at this time of year.

On Sunday, the weather office, like Jon, says we'll see rain and an even-bleaker high of just 11 C. Monday looks the same, but take heart, Winnipeg: The sun should be making a comeback on Wednesday, with a high sneaking up to around 18 C.

If you're not into gardening or collecting G.I. Joe figurines, there's a lot more stuff to do this weekend, starting with the ninth annual, citywide Doors Open Winnipeg event in which you can investigate history and architecture at 75 sites and tours this weekend. If you're into trees -- and who isn't? -- you can go out on a limb today at the Arbor Day Celebrations from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Assiniboine Park, west of the pavilion. You can ascend to the treetops on a bucket truck or ride the children's zip line. My favourite tree? I'd have to say pastry. (Insert sound of rim shot here.)

Even if it's damp, get your groove on today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Rockin' the Arlington Bridge street festival for SSCOPE and mental health. We're talking music, food, karaoke, a celebrity look-alike contest and more. Fingers crossed, Elvis will be there.

And I will be very disappointed if you do not grab your favourite plush toy (and your kids) and head over to Assiniboine Park Sunday for the 26th annual Teddy Bear's Picnic in support of the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. I plan to show up with my official B.C. Lions Teddy. He could use a little bear conditioning. And I'm feeling a bit stuffed myself.
