Your Weekend Weather
We don't wish to be alarmist, but we feel compelled to kick off our first weekend weather forecast for June with the following health warning: "Be afraid! Be very afraid!"
The weather-related medical point we are trying to make is that, after a spate of soggy weather, it is going to be hot and sunny for most of the week and we want everyone to take precautions to ensure they are not transformed into something akin to a crispy piece of bacon.
We are speaking from first-hand experience, because The Weather Column currently resembles a hothouse tomato after getting fried by the sun while spending three hours getting soaked in a reverse dunk tank at a swell charity event in support of the CNIB.
Our buddy, Dale Marciski, from Environment Canada says a ridge of high pressure is going to bring us a lot of clear skies and above-normal temperatures this week.
The weather office says it will be sunny today with a lovely high of 26 C, compared with the normal high of 22 C at this time of year.
Naturally, on Sunday, when I will be outside MCing Riverview Health Centre's Cycle on Life fundraiser, there's a 30 per cent chance of (bad word) showers to go with a high of 24 C.
The rest of the week? Wicked amazing awesome, with tons of sun and highs around 29 C, which brings us back to our warning. As my pal Dale puts it: "We are definitely into that season now. The sun is getting higher in the sky, especially at midday, and the UV index is getting in the high range.
"The sun's rays are more intense. It means you should start to be sun-smart and take precautions, like a nice hat or sunscreen or finding a shady spot. I'm not saying don't go outside, but be a bit careful."
We personally recommend wrapping yourself up in tinfoil. Yes, you'll look and feel like a baked potato, but that's a small price to pay for shielding yourself from the sun's harmful rays.
So get out there, Winnipeg, and soak up some rays Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Party for the Park on the lawn in Assiniboine Park in front of the Lyric Theatre, which will be rocking with live music.
Or check out the 25th anniversary of the Winnipeg Pride Parade, which kicks off Sunday with a rally at the legislature at 11:30 a.m. before winding along downtown streets.
You can step up your culture quotient by checking out a performance of Henry V at Shakespeare in the Ruins. Find tickets and info online (www.shakespeareintheruins.com).
Best of all, fire up your barbecue and grill some steaks and a few baked potatoes. Make sure to poke those foil-wrapped potatoes with a fork. If one of them screams, it just might be someone you know.
