Your weekend weather

In an effort to banish the gloom created by The Winter That Wouldn't Die, we are going to kick off today's weather column with an upbeat musical selection.

We dare you to feel depressed when your brain begins singing the following hopeful weather-related lyrics to The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow from the smash Broadway musical Annie:

"The sun'll come out

Tomorrow

Bet your bottom dollar

That tomorrow

There'll be sun!

Just thinkin' about

Tomorrow

Clears away the cobwebs,

And the sorrow

'Til there's none!"

There, that should put a little spring in your step, which is appropriate, considering that, technically speaking, spring arrived last Wednesday, even though it feels as if we are still trapped in the depths of a soul-destroying Winnipeg winter.

The great news is that, just like in the song, the sun will indeed come out tomorrow. In fact, it will also come out today and every day for the rest of the week. If you look at Environment Canada's website, you will see cute little cartoon-style suns beaming at you above the forecast high temperature for every day.

According to the weather office, today's forecast calls for a mix of sun and a few clouds, along with a high of -4 C, which is a tad chillier than the normal high of 2 C at this time of year.

The outlook for Sunday is identical, but by Wednesday we should be at zero degrees, and on Thursday, we'll soar to a balmy and totally normal 2 C. Be still, my frigid heart.

What with the weather becoming a bit more palatable, you are going to be looking for fun things to do. For starters, I suggest you herald the arrival of spring by heading to the Assiniboine Park Conservatory today and Sunday for the Manitoba Orchid Society's annual Show & Sale, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults; kids 14 and under are free. You can check out hundreds of blooming orchids while being serenaded by members of the Winnipeg Youth Orchestra.

While you're in the neighbourhood, meander over to Canadian Mennonite University, 500 Shaftesbury Blvd., for the sixth annual Gardening Saturday, Manitoba's largest indoor gardening symposium. There will be experts, products, services and workshops to meet all your horticultural needs. As they say, spring isn't truly here until the ice is gone from your compost heap.

Here's another novel way to boost your frozen spirits: Head down to The Forks today for 12:30 p.m. and give the beleaguered Manitoba Theatre for Young People a group hug. Seriously, organizers of the hug-in want the public to ring the company's home in a symbolic embrace. Hey, buildings are people, too.

For those of you who are still feeling a little blue about the fact we're hip-deep in snow, the Weather Column wants you to know that, in our expert opinion, sunny spring weather is just around the corner.

Bet your bottom dollar on it!
