Zebra mussels flex their muscles

MANITOBA is warning boaters and anglers, especially from Minnesota, to clean their boats to help prevent the spread of zebra mussels into the province.

The government said Thursday that the invasive species, which threaten native fish and wildlife and have caused millions of dollars damage in eastern Canada, were found this week in Pelican Lake, Minn., 50 kilometres southeast of Fargo-Moorhead.

Waters from the lake eventually flow into the Red River at Breckenridge, Minn.

It's the first known occurrence of live zebra mussels in the Red River basin, the province said.
