Winnipeg The Facts

Population

Manitoba is home to over 1.29 million people, with over 790,000 living in the Winnipeg Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). Winnipeg's population grew by an average of 1.6% each year from 2012 to 2015. Winnipeg is the model of multiculturalism with more than 180 ethnic groups speaking over 90 languages.

Employment

After posting the strongest job growth in Canada in 2015, the province is expected to gain close to 7,000 jobs this year and 11,000 jobs in 2017. The pickup in employment will contribute to a decrease in the province's unemployment rate, with the rate expected to fall from 5.7% in 2016 to 5.2% by 2019.

Housing

Single-detached starts are projected to increase between 2,500 and 2,700 units in 2016 and continue to edge higher in 2017 and 2018. MLS® sales in Manitoba are projected to rise and range from 14,500 to 14,900 transactions in 2016 and gradually increase in 2017 and 2018.

Economy

Winnipeg's economy is expected to grow by 2.3% this year, up from 1.7% in 2015. Output growth is expected to improve dramatically in the manufacturing sector (its output is forecast to expand by 2.5% in 2016—the most since 2013), thanks to a strengthening U.S. economy and a lower Canadian dollar. New Flyer, a builder of transit buses, won a US$97-million contract to provide 172 buses to Maryland and a US$180-million contract to build 350 buses for Los Angeles.

The local aerospace industry continues to be busy. General Electric is investing $26 million at its engine testing facility in Winnipeg to expand the wind tunnel and rebuild test stands. Meanwhile, StandardAero won a contract to perform maintenance and repair work on the T56 engine for the U.S. navy. The firm also renewed its contract to service military transport aircraft engines for the French air force. At the same time, Air Canada plans to create an aircraft maintenance centre at Winnipeg's airport, creating 150 jobs starting in 2017.

If conditions remain favourable, growth in Manitoba's agricultural sector is expected to reach 5.7% in 2016 and 5.1% in 2017. Manitoba is the only Prairie province that has experienced growth in the sector recently, thanks to favourable weather conditions yielding healthy crop levels.
