  • This photograph captures the peak emotional moment of an accident on McGillivray Blvd. July 13. With dolls nearby, an unidentified woman comforts one young girl while another is tended to by paramedics. I hope photos such as this move people to take better care while on the roads. • Members of the Operation Walk surgical team from Winnipeg help a patient in Nicaragua Oct. 25. The facial expression says it all. The pain and determination to walk again are obvious.

  • The photographer, keen to her surroundings, turned away from a fire on Albert Street on April 19 to get this beautiful commentary on social media and technology's role in the brave new world of journalism. (Melissa Tait / Winnipeg Free Press)

  • People who live in the shadows need to be heard. The use of ambient light in this July 25 photo of Joe Nemcshuk in a rooming house on Pritchard Avenue draws the viewer in to see what lies within those shadows.

  • Everything in this photo looks almost purposefully placed. The layers of perfectly-spaced workers, garbage, machines and the hay wall all compliment each other and create an unsettling calm for such a dramatic story.
Original caption: Winnipeg Police officers sift through debris at the Brady Road Landfill looking for the remains of Tanya Nepinak. Nepinak, 31, has been missing since September 2011 and her remains have never been found. Police believe they may be buried somewhere in the city landfill and that she was killed by alleged serial killer Shawn Lamb.

  • Children from the Little Saskatchewan First Nation play at Misty Lake Lodge Oct. 1. The open sky in this photo conveys
an uninhibited freedom for these children to play in.

  • The Flaming Trolleys practise outside Ragpickers on McDermot Avenue July 25. I love the vibe of this photo - so full of life! The bare, dirty feet of the flute player clinched it as one of my favourites.

  • Dufferin School students at city hall on Feb. 9. This is a great slice-of-life photo showing kids being kids while awaiting official business with the mayor. (Ken Gigliotti/Winnipeg Free Press)

  • A pelican swallows a fish it just caught on the Red River May 23. Some photographs are amazing because of their uniqueness, and I've never seen anything like this before. Perfectly executed backlight details this big bird's lunch.
