Zellers: Everything must go
Zellers opened in 1931 under the banner of ‘stores for thrifty Canadians.’ They’re closing with far less fanfare, but were still a place for the spendthrift. Of the six stores in Winnipeg, three are now closed, the other three are in the last liquidation throes. Free Press photographer Mike Deal, recently at the Fort Richmond location, captured the ‘all-sales-are-final’ final days of the once great Canadian discount retailer. In the late 1980s and 1990s, when Zellers’ revenues were routinely topping $1 billion, the store was riding the slogan: ‘Where the lowest price is the law!’ It may no longer be retail law, but it is the reality until the last store is shuttered.
