Judges battle over salaries
WINNIPEG -- Provincial court judges are racing toward a courtroom showdown against the province over their salaries.
They've taken their case to the Court of Queen's Bench, naming Justice Minister Andrew Swan as a defendant. The case was filed in February with no fanfare.
Douglas Cieszynski, director of negotiation services for the provincial government, said the case appears headed towards a faceoff in court even though both sides are talking.
Last fall, an independent committee recommended salary increases that Finance Minister Rosann Wowchuk refused, describing them as too rich for Manitobans. The committee recommended a five per cent raise in each of 2009 and 2010.
