Bombers-Argos Eve
A few notes from a busy walk-through day at Canad Inns Stadium:
CH-CH-CHANGES: The Bombers have placed defensive backs Clint Kent, Jerry-Ralph Jules and Donald Brown Jr. on the 46-man roster, moving fellow DBs Alex Suber (hamstring) to the one-game injured list and Keyuo Craver (knee) to the nine-game injured list. Others out for Friday include WR Jabari Arthur, OL Ryan Donnelly, and FB Daryl Stephenson (all are on the one-game injured list). OL Glenn January and LS Chris Cvetkovic remain on the nine-game.
NUMBER OF THE BEAST: Also on the Bombers depth chart is long snapper Taylor Inglis, who replaces Adam Bestard (released). Jersey hawks please note the number change: Inglis is now wearing No. 52, not the No. 51 the team handed him during practice this week.
COME DANCING: The Bombers have a pre-game ritual this season, where the rookies who are about to make their first CFL start are required to dance in the middle of the player’s circle at the end of the light workout. "I hope the players wouldn’t count me as a rookie – even though I am a rookie head coach. No, I didn’t do my dance," offered Paul LaPolice. The coach said the dance revolution (because it’s a circle – get it?) is the only thing this year’s edition of the Bombers will do along the lines of rookie initiation.
OK COMPUTER: Argos head coach Jim Barker chose to pass on QB Buck Pierce in the off-season (instead opting for former NFL back-up QB Cleo Lemon) due to Pierce’s injury history – specifically the concussion concerns. The former Calgary GM’s main reason for looking past the former B.C. Lion pivot? A previous history with head injuries: "I was involved with Dave Dickenson in Calgary. We had his helmet hooked up with a computer thing and he took a hellacious hit in the pre-season that went off the charts. The one that ended his career was just a blip. That’s how those things work."
EMOTIONAL RESCUE: More Barker, this time on getting controversial DT Adriano Belli back this week: "Adriano has looked me in the eye and he’s going to do his best. What makes Adriano Belli the great player he is is the emotion. You can’t take that away from him. There’s good and bad with Adriano. He understands the ramifications of taking stupid penalties…and hopefully we’ll make progress with that."
