Crazy Manitoba weather
Something from the electronic mail bag:
I still am unsure of this Blue Bombers team. There seems to be a lot of optimism, but yet they’re only 2-2 and have yet to beat a team with a winning record. Is .500 a reasonable record? Are they better than that? Thanks, John.
Join the club, John. For as good as they looked against Edmonton, they looked equally as bad against the Tiger-Cats the week before.
Personally, I think the jury is still out on these guys. Until they show against a team with a better record, it’s hard to label them.
Are they better than the teams below them (B.C., Hamilton, Edmonton)? Possibly. Are they better than Toronto, Montreal, and Saskatchewan? Maybe. The Calgary game on Saturday should give us a better understanding.
Every time I think I have an idea of how this Winnipeg club is going to perform before a game, they do the exact opposite. I thought they would lose to the Ticats in Week 1 (they won). Then I thought they would beat Toronto (they didn’t). I thought they’d give Hamilton a better game than they did in Week 3, and I thought the Eskimos would handle them last Saturday. Wrong on both counts.
Bottom line when trying to figure out this team: Wait 10 minutes. The forecast could change.
Notes from Wednesday’s practice:
- Right off the bat: Coach Paul LaPolice said there’s a 90 per cent QB Steven Jyles will start Saturday. No surprises there. Buck Pierce wasn’t in pads and only tested the right knee occasionally.
- Looks like DE Armond Willis will be in the line-up, replacing Odell Willis (no relation) at the end of the defensive line. The team has been tight-lipped regarding Odell’s absence, saying Tuesday it was a "personal matter" before upgrading to this statement today: "The matter concerning Odell Willis is a private issue and there will be no further comment from the Winnipeg Football Club."
- Punter Mike Renaud did not participate in the workout, leading to speculation that K Alexis Serna will handle both the place-kicking and punting duties against Calgary Saturday. LaPolice said Renaud (knee) will be evaluated as the week moves along here.
- More injury news: KR Markus Howell (hamstring) and SB Terrence Edwards (back) did not participate today. Special teams captain Shawn Gallant (knee) has been placed on the nine-game injured list. No decision on the playing status of LB Marcellus Bowman (hand) has been made.
