Hard Rain: Training Camp Day 12

A rainy, windy, downright miserable morning at Canad Inns Stadium. Felt sorry for the guys getting the stage ready for the Eagles concert next week. The best rain gear in the world wouldn't have kept those guys dry. Here's what's happening:

LOOKING GOOD: Thumbs up to WR Kenny Strickland and WR Chris Davis, who made a few nice catches during the first half of the workout. Strickland had his best day in camp, pulling down a number of wet balls. DB Lavar Glover intercepted QB Steven Jyles in one of the few picks of the day. It might have been the only one, actually.

WATCH OUT: Two scary moments for the Blue and Gold brass. The first one involved SB Terrence Edwards and DE Phillip Hunt, who collided with each other hard in the backfield. Hunt looked shaken up immediately following the smack. He was later OK. The second "uh-oh" of the day involved... wait for it: Buck Pierce. The quarterback cut his session short and was walking around with an ice pack on his elbow. Head coach Paul LaPolice threw a bucket of cold water on the concern in the media scrum after practice, saying the pivot was just a little sore and he decided to hold Pierce out of the last few reps.

NEW BLOOD: The club added two more players to its massive training camp roster today, bringing in import OL Carlton Medder and import LB Merrill Johnson. Both were in uniform this morning. Medders, a 6-foot-5, 319 pound product from Florida, comes to Winnipeg after seeing his release from the B.C. Lions training camp earlier this week. Johnson (6-foot, 210-pound) is out of Auburn. He'll challenge for the weak-side linebacker position. LaPolice said Johnson could play this weekend in Hamilton.

QUOTE: "When a guy comes available, we'll still evaluate. We'll be doing that when our roster is set, we're going to bringing guys up because it's a never changing thing. It may be September that we fly people up to evaluate them. That's the process you do in football -- it's a change business." -- LaPolice on the need for two more bodies in camp. The Bombers have 76 players on the camp roster.

WALKING WOUNDED: LT Glenn January (torn pectoral), OL Ryan Donnelly (knee), WR David Ball (hamstring), FB Daryl Stephenson (hamstring), and WR Jabari Arthur (foot) all sat out the workout. LB Nick Kordic (concussion) also took a pass, though he did ride the bike, indicating that he may be making progress. WR Travis Shelton (hamstring) saw limited action. SB Brock Ralph (knee) and DB Brandon Stewart (groin) were also a part of the sideline brigade.

AND FINALLY: Missing practice for the second straight day was DE Odell Willis. He has a sore groin.
