High on Oak Park High

I was recently at the Roblin Park Community Centre Winter Carnival. It is known in these parts as the best winter carnival in Winnipeg.

We were at the carnival the day of a concert from Youtube sensation Sean Quigley, Winnipeg’s Little Drummer Boy. I admire the great work this young man has done, and putting on a free show for his community was only a small part.

The rest of the Oak Park students who were there that day were a great example of fine young people. They were there to support their obviously much-valued friend. But I was most impressed with the nice girls who were making sure the smaller kids at the concert were given a spot at the front. I’m especially grateful to the nice, long-haired girl who offered to take my seven-year-old to the front so she could see. This was my daughter’s first ever concert, and she was thrilled.

I see great things coming from this high school and these kids should be recognized for it. I see a lot of caring and leadership coming from the students of Oak Park High School in my community of Westdale and with the Oak Park Buddies program with my children’s school. These are the leaders of our future and I am proud of them for what they are and what they will become.

This is the work of Oak Park teachers, parents and the students themselves. But I feel secure that the future of Canada is in these kids hands.

I know that often, the public opinion of teenagers is not great, but I ask everyone throughout Winnipeg to find out what their local high school has done for their community and show these kids the encouragement and appreciation they need to become great individuals.
