Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION

SHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

We don’t get the secrecy, frankly.

Steven Jyles took all the reps with the Bombers No. 1 offence on Thursday – and for most of the week -- with Buck Pierce periodically throwing and moving around gingerly. But Bomber head coach Paul LaPolice still won’t declare who his starting QB is this week in Hamilton.

Why? Well, for starters it’s because football coaches everywhere are paranoid when it comes to announcing their roster, the thinking being that keeping it a secret for as long as possible will somehow have the opposition so frustrated and confused it will mess up their entire week of preparation and have them panicking if they guess wrong.

Or something like that.

And so it went again after the Bombers final workout at Rods Field when LaPolice, as per usual, clammed up like a man being interrogated by the CIA when asked about his starting QB.

Said the coach: ""Buck’s doing well. We had him moving around a little bit today but with the rain we were just unsure of the stability with the grass field so we kept him out of some stuff.

"We’ll make announcements tomorrow... I want to make sure I speak to our general manager again. We won’t declare that for awhile."

Reporter: "So Steven is the guy for the third week?

LaPolice: "Like I said... we’ll make those decisions... he may be the starter. Just as Buck could be."

Reporter 2: "Is this a little bit of gamesmanship on your part?"

LaPolice: "Well, we’ll announce it when we have to, OK?"

Thanks for that.

Couldn’t help but imagine the chat between Coach LaPolice and Joe Mack later today should feature the Cone of Silence, straight from Get Smart.

GONZO ALONZO: Cut adrift by the Bombers on Thursday were DE Armond Willis, DB Donald Brown, Jr. and Canadian receiver David McKoy. LaPolice worked with McKoy during his days in Saskatchewan but it looks like a knee injury which had required surgery was still bothering him. The Bombers plucked Scott McHenry back off the Riders practice roster and he’ll be activated to play special teams Saturday in Hamilton.

Willis was made expendable with DT Dorian Smith returning to the starting lineup while Brown Jr. was made expendable because the Bombers are intrigued by Deon Beasley’s skill set. Beasley, for the record, was occasionally returning kicks at Thursday’s practice.

THE SHUFFLE: Expect Dorian Smith to start at DT over Moton Hopkins while Chris Davis starts for Terence Jeffers-Harris (ankle) and Bernard Hicks for Ike Charlton (released). The other changes will see punter Mike Renaud return (dressing for the injured Jerry-Ralph Jules), former Argo safety James Green dressing for Ian Logan (hamstring) while McHenry will replace Markus Howell (hamstring).
