So long Gallant and other news...

Maybe it's because we're too old school, but it's a shame Shawn Gallant opted to 'announce' his retirement from football via Facebook.

Look, we've got nothing against social networking and Twitter and all that jazz, it's just that a player like Gallant deserves to be celebrated as much as this game's great stars. Gallant, just so you know, is leaving the game to chase down bad guys as a member of the Winnipeg Police Service.

He is one of the CFL's good guys. Good special teams player, good teammate, good human being.

He carved out a damn fine 11-year CFL career after being drafted out of Eastern Kentucky by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2000, suiting up for the Ottawa Renegades and Montreal Alouettes and the Bombers, twice, in 2005-2006 and 2009-10. If he didn't turn to wearing a police uniform, he would have made an outstanding special-teams coach.

Good luck on the force, Shawn.

HUNT A POPULAR MAN... Word now is that Bomber DE Phillip Hunt worked out with the Cleveland Browns this week along with Montreal Alouette O-lineman Josh Bourke. Hunt has also had a look from the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings and the CFL QB sack king may draw more interest in the next few weeks.

WAIT AND SEE: We're told the Bombers are in a holding pattern on their search for a defensive coordinator to replace Kavis Reed. The Bombers are waiting to see what unfolds in Saskatchewan where Greg Marshall, one of the leading contenders for the head-coaching job there, may hire Richie Hall as his defensive boss. Hall is also atop Paul LaPolice's wish list for the same gig here.

SOME SAD NEWS...

Sorry to hear of the passing of former Bomber Peter Ribbins, who spent six years (1971-76) in Blue and Gold after being draft out of Ottawa in 1971. To read more, click here:

FINALLY...

Former Bomber offensive coordinator Mike Gibson has landed work with the Calgary Stampeders as a running backs coach. He replaces Rick Campbell, who has returned to Edmonton to join the staff of new coach Kavis Reed. Gibson left his job as the offensive coordinator of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to move west, as he recently married a lady from Alberta.
