2010 crime rate
Winnipeg police say they’ve now got their ducks lined up.
On Monday the WPS issued a statement saying they’ve fixed the statistical snafus in their 2010 annual report.
Here’s what they said:
"The Winnipeg Police Service 2010 Annual Report was made available to the public on Dec. 28, 2011. Following its release errors came to light that resulted in the service conducting a review of statistics relative to 2009 and 2010 calendar years.
"Winnipeg Police and Statistic Canada worked closely to verify submitted statistics and identify the cause of any anomalies. The review confirmed accuracy of reported statistics, with the only exception being the Theft Over $5,000 and Theft Under $5,000 categories, where a coding error resulted in approximately 8,000 higher reported incidents in these categories combined.
"All other categories of numbers were confirmed correct.
"The overall impact of the review is a minor change in the crime rate decrease from -7 per cent to – 6 per cent.
"An updated version of the revised Report is now available on our website: http://www.winnipeg.ca/police/annualreports/2010/2010_wps_annual_report_english.pdf.
Police had to re-run their numbers after former Deputy Chief Menno Zacharias blogged Dec. 29 he found a few big flaws in the 2010 annual report. Two weeks later police pulled the report off the WPS website to re-run the numbers.
