Do angels drive City of Winnipeg buses?

I enjoy walking for exercise and am committed to it six days a week, Saturday reserved as my rest day.

On Christmas Day, even though had a turkey to cook, family coming over plus it was freezing out, I bundled up and headed out the door at 8:10 a.m. It was so quiet everywhere, just a few cars about. I could imagine everyone inside their homes having Christmas coffee with family.

I trudged along, taking in the serenity of my surroundings. On my way back, I heard the sound of a transit bus coming up the street behind me and I looked up. Can you believe the bus stopped? The driver opened her window and asked me if I needed a ride.

So many thoughts went through my mind. Does she think ‘'m cold? Does she think I’m alone on Christmas Day? Or was she yet another kind transit driver that not too long ago we heard about in the news?

I told her I was ok and wished her a Merry Christmas. I continued home, realizing I had just received the best Christmas gift. Someone reaching out. Someone caring. And the best part, a complete stranger.

Why does a random act of kindness cause so much wonder? Shouldn’t it be more common to not be in disbelief when someone extends a helping hand? I think maybe we need to share these great events. Hence my letter.

To whoever that driver was, I hope you had a Merry Christmas. Thanks for extending your gift of humanity. From someone who had a great Christmas walk.
