Dog-rescue group rescued in the nick of time

I would like to tell Winnipeg about some really nice people who helped a dog-rescue group in a time of need.

A cargo van had been brought to my house on a Saturday to gathering kennels, food, etc. for the next day’s drive to Easterville. A dog shoot was to begin the following Monday so it was an emergency trip.

Volunteer driver Maisy was to arrive at 8 p.m. to pick up the loaded van and have it ready to go at 5 a.m. Sunday morning for the long drive.

As Maisy pulled out of my driveway, the heavy van got stuck. We shovelled for about 20 minutes to no avail. CAA was hours away, and we had to get this vehicle on the road.

I called in recruitments, Ed and Elaine, my great neighbors and volunteers. We shovelled and shovelled and shovelled. Nothing would get that van out.

Then a wonderful miracle happened. A Pakistani family were out for a walk and when they saw us struggling, they came to help. Father Mohammed and his two adult sons were just wonderful. At 11 p.m after two and a half hours of team work, the van rolled out of the driveway. We were all exhausted but happy to see the van on its way.

Best part: 12 dogs were rescued from being shot.

So why are there dog shoots? Because people do not spay or neuter their dogs. Don’t blame the dogs, blame the owners.
