For the community

The holiday season brings out the best in everyone.

As a teacher at Tec Voc High School in Winnipeg, I have been fortunate to see this each and every year, but am overwhelmed by it this year.

The staff and students at Tec Voc choose to support students and their families who are in need at this time of year. Although we do recognize that their hunger and challenges do not go away after the holiday season, at least we can make this time a little brighter.

This year we supported 13 families from the Tec Voc community. Not only did staff and students come through with donations of non-perishable food items, but also donated over $700 to be used to buy more for the hampers. This on the same day the staff donated in excess of $600 from their pockets to take our United Way campaign above $14,000.

In all my years of being involved in this fundraising drive, I have never seen our hampers overflow like these ones did.

We were also fortunate to receive an extra $100 from the Superstore at St. James Street and Sargent Avenue.

We also collected money for the Pennies from Heaven Campaign, a grand total of $345.

All of this reminds me of the great community I have the privilege to live in and the great school I get to teach in.
