The roads were slippery and cars bumper to bumper. Heading south on Sherbrook and waiting for a light change to cross Broadway, a homeless person crossed in front of three lanes of vehicles.

He was wearing a pair of house slippers, his coat was open and his hands were bare. Watching, stunned at his slow progress, my anger at the slow drive evaporated.

A car on Broadway west of the intersection, its passenger door open, waited for the homeless man. A woman reached out over a metre-high snow bank with what I assumed were her husband’s winter boots and handed them to the slipper-footed man.

The lights changed, and we all crept through the intersection, heads turned right.

What a generous gesture and why didn’t I run out with my gloves?
