Little laugh over special gift

  • Print

I submitted to the Free Press' [140th anniversary feature] the story of winning the paper’s colouring contests when I was a child in the 1930s. The prize was usually a colouring book and some crayons. After my story ran in the paper, my neighbours, Sergei and Liz Sherman, presented me with a colouring book and crayons, saying it was from the Free Press.

They are both from a small town farming area in northern Manitoba, and just a few years younger than I (nearing 87), so they remembered the Prairie Review section of the Free Press which carried all sorts of information for farmers and others, and of course, the colouring contests.

Anyway as a joke, they bought the colouring book and crayons, as they liked my little story and the fond memories it brought back for them. They decided to pull off a little skit during a dinner we were at. It was well presented, and we all had a good laugh and a round of applause for me which was very nice.
