I hadn’t heard the expression "pay it forward" until a year ago, when I was in a Subway restaurant ordering a sandwich.
There was a City of Winnipeg worker ordering lunch, and he said he would pay for his co-worker who was with him.
I jokingly said to him, "Oh, are you going to pay for mine too?"
He replied, "Sure." Whereupon I said I was only joking.
He said to the cashier to include my lunch on his bill. I said really, I was only joking, and his reply was: "Pay It Forward," and he paid for my lunch.
I was in awe that a perfect stranger would do this. Boy, did it ever make my day.
Sometime after that I saw the movie of the same title, Pay It Forward, and thought of this kind gesture.
