I lost my cellphone as I was walking my dogs along Assiniboine Avenue on a recent visit to Winnipeg.
A gentleman found it, but he wasn’t sure what to do with it as he doesn’t own a cellphone and mine was locked. The phone was returned to me through the joint efforts of the gentleman, his wife, their neighbour, a home-care worker and a receptionist at my mother’s optometrist’s office. The office was involved because their contact card was the one and only piece of information tucked into my phone case.
My sincere thanks to everyone involved.
I am not only grateful to them, but also to the people working at businesses in Fort Garry Place. My "find my phone" app was telling me the phone was there, so I canvassed a number of the businesses on the off chance someone had picked up the phone on their way to work. Everyone was unfailingly friendly and sympathetic.
My husband and I are in the process of moving from a northern centre to Winnipeg, and I was worried I’d find the city too big, too anonymous and too uncaring. That, obviously, is not the case.
