Caldwell coy on leadership rumour

  • Print

Will he or won’t he? He apparently won’t. Maybe.

The blogosphere and my email account were abuzz today about the rumor that Brandon East MLA Drew Caldwell was considering a late run for the NDP leadership. The buzz was created by a story in the Wheat City Journal that had Caldwell, the only man ever fired from a Gary Doer cabinet, getting lots of calls urging him to run.

The story added, however, that the reporter could not reach Caldwell on Tuesday to update his intentions.

The Sausage Factory decided to put this one to rest by going old school. Reached by phone yesterday (that black plastic thingy that old people in journalism use to call the people they write about) Caldwell said does not intend to run for the leadership. Does that mean never, or just right now?

"As we speak, I will not be a candidate for the leadership of the NDP."

So, are you reserving a final decision? "I will not be a candidate for the leadership of the NDP."

It’s not clear why Caldwell would want to be muddy about this issue. But it’s clear that he was being pretty cute with the Wheat City Journal, just as he was a bit cute with me.

And for the record, I think he’d add a real X-factor the race. But for now, and possibly forever, he says he’s not running.

"You’ll be the first person I’ll call." Okey-dokey.
