Mo' better booze
With the mercury dropping and the snow rising, I'm looking forward to warming up tonight at The Crown Royal Master Blender Experience. I'm really interested in tasting through the entire line of made-in-Manitoba Crown Royal products, including the brand new Crown Royal Black.
Admittedly, the only Crown Royal I've tasted is the entry-level stuff that comes in the purple velvet bags over the holidays. I can't wait to taste their many other whiskies that they make - Master Blender Andrew McKay will be on hand to speak a bit more on them. That reminds me... I've got to get to their Gimli distillery soon...
Sticking with local bevvies, I received a message via Facebook about a special batch of beer Half Pints Brewing Co. is putting together. Called Pistachio Mustachio Brown Ale, it uses the brewery's Sweet Nikki Brown Ale as a base, and includes some unique flavours thanks to the addition of pistachios and some bourbon. The flavour combination sounds really good, and should be a nice hearty drink on a snowy November night.
The brew promises to be in short supply, but I can tell you that there'll be a cask of the Pistachio Mustachio Brown Ale at the Lo Pub this Saturday (November 27) as part of the Mo at the Lo festivities. If you haven't guessed already, proceeds from the cask go toward prostate cancer research in conjunction with Movember. Yes, Movember is why there are so many guys sporting ugly facial hair this month. Local acts The Details and Kicker will be performing.
Also of note: Half Pints have been rolling out some nice-looking new packaging as of late. Click here for a picture of the label on the bottling line, as posted in Half Pints' Brewer's Blog, and watch for the new boxes at Liquor Marts and better beer vendors soon.

When he wasn't bashing on a drum kit in local punk rock bands, Ben spent the mid '90s hucking cases of wine around to pay for two English degrees. Now he's the Winnipeg Free Press wine columnist and blogger.
The extent of Ben's wine experience in the mid-90s was memories of accidentally leaving a bottle of White Zinfandel in the freezer overnight, and the ensuing mess he was left with. Between 1996 and 2005 Ben absorbed all he could about wine while working at wine shops to pay for school. Meanwhile, he was churning out papers for his BA and MA in English (from the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba, respectively).
Ben became the Winnipeg Free Press' weekly wine columnist in 2005, and two years later joined Wine Access magazine as a contributor, a member of their national tasting panel and a judge at the Canadian Wine Awards and International Value Wine Awards until the magazine closed up shop in 2013.
In 2013 Ben joined the Winnipeg Free Press as a copy/web editor.
